The Mossback Chronicles
Being a Record of the Education and Near-Expiration of Pip Scurry
Welcome to the Wild Kinzua.
Long before the dams tamed the river, the asphalt paved the valleys, or the sound of an engine echoed through the ancient hemlocks, the Allegheny High Plateau was a land that tolerated no mistakes. It was the realm of the wolf, the catamount, and the massive Eastern Elk.
This series presents fictionalized accounts of life in the pre-settlement Kinzua wilderness. Our stories follow the adventures of Hogarth "Hoag" Mossback—a man more oak-bark than human—and his young charge, Pipkin "Pip" Scurry.
While the geography and the "critters" described are real to our region's history, Pip's misadventures are purely the product of imagination, inspired by the rugged spirit of the early woods-runners.
Follow along as Pip navigates slippery logs, angry wildlife, and Hoag’s dubious "Hard Truths."
“The Kinzua ain’t a picture-book, boy. It’s a machine.
Stop lookin' AT it and start feelin' PART of it.”
