Hector’s Run Falls: A Hidden Challenge in the Allegheny National Forest
Hector’s Run Falls: A Hidden Challenge in the Allegheny National Forest
Tucked away between the small communities of Ludlow and Barnes, within the sprawling wilderness of the Allegheny National Forest, Hector’s Run Falls is a spectacular but often overlooked natural wonder. This isn’t a gentle, paved trail; reaching the falls requires navigation, careful footing, and a bit of a wilderness spirit. The resulting view, however, is worth the effort, especially after a recent rain when the falls truly come to life.
You can watch a short video of the final approach to Hector's Run Falls here.
Here is your comprehensive guide to planning your trip and reaching this elusive cascade.
Before You Go: Critical Safety and Planning
This hike is considered challenging and potentially dangerous. Proper preparation is absolutely essential.
1. Timing is Everything: Rain Required Hector's Run is an ephemeral stream. The falls usually only have water running over them after a recent rain. Do not hike here unless there has been a significant rain event in the previous 24–48 hours. The falls are best viewed during the spring snowmelt or immediately following heavy storms. Be sure to plan your hike accordingly.
2. WARNING: Steep Cliffs The terrain around the falls is rugged. As you approach, you will find yourself at the top of the falls. There are steep cliffs at the falls, and a slip here can be fatal. Wear footwear with good tread, and be extremely careful when hiking near the edge.
3. No Cell Service, Advanced Hiking Cell phone service drops off about half-way into the hike. There are no maps or trail blazes at the trailhead. This is not a hike for beginners or those who require constant GPS reassurance. You must be comfortable navigating on unmarked logging and access roads.
4. Mandatory Gear
- Sturdy Boots with Good Tread: Footing near the falls is slick. Good grip is essential.
- Navigation: Download directions and maps before you lose service. A compass and paper topo map are excellent backups.
- Water & Snacks: This is a ~2-mile round trip, but the forest terrain can make it feel longer.
- From Sheffield: Take Route 6 toward Ludlow.
- Turn Right onto South Hillside Drive: Make this turn just as you come into Ludlow.
- Turn Left onto Water Street.
- Turn Right onto Scenic Drive.
- Turn Right onto Forestry Road 258: After about a mile on Scenic Drive, make this right turn.
- Drive 2.1 Miles: Follow FR 258 until you reach Forestry Road 258H on your left.
- Park at the Gate: FR 258H is gated off. There is a small parking area beside the gate. This is where your hike begins.
- Start at the Gate: Begin your hike by walking past the closed gate and following FR 258H.
- The Critical Fork: Follow 258H to the fork in the road and take the left fork (downhill).
- The Meadow and Well-Head: You will arrive at a small meadow with a light blue National Fuel well-head.
- Trail Turn-off: The trail turns to the right as you are facing the well-head.
- Final Stretch: Continue to follow the trail for another 200 yards or so.
- Arrival: You will arrive at the top of the falls. If you lose the trail, follow the sound of the water to arrive at the side of the falls. The easiest access to the base of the falls is to the left side as you look down from the top.
